Romo, “They exposed us…”

Sunday, December 28, 2008 21:58 | Filed in Game Day Notes

Tony Romo on loss…

“It’s frustrating and disappointing, you know, it obviously doesn’t feel good, we obviously need to play a lot better than we did. I never go into a game thinking we’d lose like this, and always feel confident your team has a chance of winning, and it didn’t go our kind of way this day.”

On the fumbles…

“I was getting ready to throw in both instances, both instances, and you’re getting ready to throw, and the guy got me, and at a certain point of the game you need to risk things, certainly.”

How to get it done next season…

“We need to look at everything in the off-season and I think we need to do a few things to counter some of the things the other teams are doing, we didn’t execute to what we needed to, to win, but it taught us a lot…they (Eagles) exposed us on some things we do fundamentally offensively, and give them credit, Jimmie Johnson and that staff, they do a good job and made it difficult at certain stages of the game.”

Whose to blame?

“We got to play better, I have to play better, the team has to play better, we didn’t play good this December, that’s the story.”

On waving off the fourth-and-one punt…

“I didn’t wave it off, he (Wade) said punt, and he changed his mind, they said in his ear, they changed it.”

What do you mean “exposed us?”

“We have certain protections that they knew we were running, there are hots and sights, certain things during the game, and sometimes you may not run some of them for several weeks, but during the the second drive of the game…we threw 5-6 on one drive beginning part of the game.”

Continues…

“They made an adjustment, to break down our protection where a guy comes free, but since they’re in tight man coverage, there’s no one available, and you don’t have the protection needed for the route. Teams fall into that, and they did a good job of understanding what we’re trying to do. It has nothing to do with a team knowing you or not, the reason they could do that, they know us, but as far as us knowing them, we don’t know what they’re going to run. They just know the schematic part of what we do, and once we got behind the eight ball it made it tough in those situations.”

On rap of not winning the big games…

“I wake up tomorrow and keep living, you mean you just keep playing the game, it’s enjoyable, and we’re going to try and win next year, and get into the Super Bowl, and if you don’t, okay, and if you do, okay…it’s part of the job.”

On how he handles the criticism of his big-game record and off-season…

“I’ve had a lot worse happen to me than a loss in a sporting event, and if this is the worst thing that happens to me, I’ve lived a good life.”

I agree with Romo that the Cowboy’s were exposed. My take is different in that I can’t give the Eagles sole credit for the revelation. It is my feeling that this Cowboy team was revealed bit by bit, and week by week through the entire 2008 season.

I am guilty of initially believing that this Cowboy team had more “Talent” than any team in the NFL and that alone, was what was going to get their tickets, to Tampa, punched.

I suffer from selective amnesia at times, and what I chose to forget is that talent can not be accurately measured. The above statement sounds crazy. What does that statment mean?

    Example;
Everyone thinks Tiger Woods wins because he has more “Talent”. Who can say if the above is true when compared to guys like Mickelson? What I can confidently say is that Woods is willing to prepare harder than anyone else, and to do more than what should be required. Wood’s willingness to do more than his competition can be seen in how a skinny kid has turned himself into a chiseled athlete. He was willing to change his swing a couple of times because he wanted to do whatever it took to be the best.

My point as it pertains to the 2008 Cowboy team is that, they were not willing to do whatever it took to ensure that their goal was achieved. This team obviously was unwilling to do the things that would eliminate the penalties, turnovers, missed assignments, and…..

I will remember this 2008 Cowboy team as one that I perceived to be loaded with “Talent”. I will also remember this team as one that was willing to be satisfied with merely the perception of greatness.

Concerning the 2008 Cowboys I must agree with Romo “They Exposed us…”

whether Jason Garrett leaves or not, Dallas is exposed because Dallas never has changed their offensive philosophy.Dallas relies on their Defensive strength, and when other defenses cause Dallas 3 and out, The Defense is “worn” out by the 4th quarter, has no Freshness to “Finish”. Until Dallas gets a 90′s type Offense Going consistently getting 1st downs, Fans will be looking at the same scenarios each week next season.
