    And then there were four.

    Fred Thompson

Once seen by many Republicans as the one true conservative in the race, Fred Thompson announced today that he was withdrawing from the 2008 presidential contest.

Thompson came into the campaign amid great anticipation. But his campaign never gained traction and he failed to garner a respectable showing in South Carolina, the state he had declared as a test of his viability.

It remains to be seen which of the four remaining candidates — McCain, Romney, Giuliani or Huckabee — benefits most from Thompson’s withdrawal.

    ABC’s Stephen Portnoy reports.

Fred was the only strong conservative leader in this race and will be missed. In our age of technology, allow me to urge all voters to take their responsibility seriously and investigate the records of all candidates before election day. Please do not allow media to influence your decision.
