Jimmy Carter credits racism for GOP success in the south.

Here at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, former president Jimmy Carter spoke with Chris Plante, our radio row neighbor from WMAL in Baltimore. The interview was brief and touched on the Clinton-Obama rift and how to heal it; and also on the role that racism will play in the coming election.
We grabbed the video camera and horned in on the action. The audio is poor and captures a lot of background noise because we were using the built-in camera mic instead of being hardwired to the console being used by WMAL.
Nonetheless, it’s worth listening. Listen closely about two-thirds of the way in. Carter says that the Republican party has, “capitalized on the latent, or remaining, racism in the south.” He goes on to say that racism has been the, “basis of the Republican dominance in Georgia and other southern states.
