Smith County Man Sentenced for Federal Firearms Violations

TYLER – A Smith County man has been sentenced to federal prison for firearms violations. Ernesto Camacho, 35, of Tyler, pleaded guilty on September 8th to being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison yesterday by U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis.

According to information presented in court, on March 1, 2011, Camacho was arrested following a traffic stop during which a firearm was discovered in his vehicle. Further investigation revealed Camacho was a convicted felon, having been previously found guilty of aggravated assault, arson and theft. As a convicted felon, Camacho is prohibited by federal law from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition. Camacho was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 2nd, and charged with federal firearms violations.
