The number four ranked John Tyler Lions spoiled homecoming for the Mesquite Horn Jaguars as they defeated them 35-30 Friday night at E.H. Hanby Stadium in Mesquite. A back and forth affair, the John Tyler Lions used their big play ability to take the lead in the fourth quarter and eventually pull away for the victory.
Senior receiver Fred Ross accounted for 138 total yards and two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground for his team leading 7 scores on the season. Ross’ second score of the night, a 27-yard TD reception gave the Lions a 21-17 halftime lead. After a scoreless third quarter, the Jaguars went in front 28-24 with nine minutes remaining on a touchdown pass from Destri White to his tight end Jacob Meyer from 16 yards away. But CUJO responded. On their next possession, senior quarterback Greg Ward, who had sat out part of the second half with an injury, came back into the ballgame and connected with Senior tight end Tyus Bowser for a 38-yard touchdown to give the lead back the Lions. John Tyler put the game seemingly out of reach when Greg Ward scored on 31-yard touchdown scramble with 2:08 remaining that gave the Lions a 35-24 lead.
Ward finished 15-of-20 for 218 yards passing with three scores. Senior receiver Darion Flowers caught nine passes for 88 yards.
The Lions come back home next Saturday night to finish up non-district play against the Tigres of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
