Smith County Trooper Arrested for DWI

TYLER — A trooper who was involved in a wreck in early November has been arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated during that incident. KETK reports Smith County DPS Trooper Joe Don Abernathy was booked into the Smith County Jail just after 1:30 on Monday afternoon. He was released about 15 minutes later on a $1,000 surety bond. Abernathy crashed on November 5 after allegedly swerving to miss a deer on Old Omen Road in Tyler. It happened near the Arrowhead Golf Course Shortly after 7:15am. The car reportedly sustained substantial damage. Abernathy resigned from his position as a DPS trooper the next day.
