ALLEN – John Tyler started off slow against Frisco’s Racoons Friday night at the $60 million Allen Eagle Stadium, but all’s well that ends well as the Lions rally to a 45-28 win and advance to the Class 4A Div I Quarterfinal round.
Frisco’s wing T ball control offense created some assignment problems early for John Tyler, racking up 230 yards of offense, controlling the clock and staking to a 21-10 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. However, with 50 seconds left in the half, Darion Flowers hauled in a six-yard pass from Greg Ward. The TD was John Tyler’s second of the half and cut the deficit down to only four points going into halftime.
After the half, CUJO seemed to have found it’s stride taking six plays to march 62 yards before Ward found Fred Ross who dashed the final 29 yards after the catch to put the Lions ahead for the first time in the contest, 24-21.
CUJO’s defense made some adjustments as well, forcing the first three-and-out against the Racoons all night and forcing the only punt. Again, six plays later the Lions found paydirt and stretched out the lead 31-21, this time coming on Ward’s second rushing TD of the night, a 20-yard run. Frisco mounted one additional drive consuming over eight minutes of clock time, resulting in a score to cut into the Lions lead, 31-28, but that proved to be the final productive possession for the Racoons.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Lions who added scores on two DeQuante Woods runs of eight and 21 respectively to seal the victory, 45-28.
John Tyler advances to face Frisco’s district rival, Frisco Centennial who won their matchup over Red Oak 40-14.
The two teams will face off 7:30 Friday at Ennis Stadium.
