Smith County Man Sentenced for Drug Trafficking in East Texas

Bonifacio Nunez-RomeroTYLER – A 41-year-old Tyler man was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in federal prison for drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales Wednesday. Bonifacio Nunez-Romero was found guilty by a jury on Aug. 15, 2012, of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. He was sentenced in Tyler by U.S. District Judge Michael H. Schneider.

According to information presented in court, up until September 2011, Nunez-Romero conspired with another person to acquire and distribute methamphetamine in the Tyler area. Evidence presented at trial showed Nunez-Romero was distributing methamphetamine manufactured in Mexico and also selling heroin. He was also found in possession of firearms, a military flak jacket and body armor. Nunez-Romero was indicted by a federal grand jury on Aug. 1, 2012 and charged with drug trafficking violations.
