MacClements,_Jonathan_NRTYLER — Jonathan MacClements, MD, professor and chair of family medicine at UT Health Northeast, has received the Regents Outstanding Teaching Award from The University of Texas System Board of Regents. This is the second year that faculty at the six UT health institutions have been eligible for the award. Dr. MacClements is one of just 39 faculty members from these health institutions to receive the 2013 award.

Dr. MacClements is an outstanding leader of our undergraduate medical education, graduate education, and continuing education programs. Hes passionate about training the next generation of physicians, said David Coultas, MD, vice president for clinical and academic affairs at UT Health. This award is one more example of Dr. MacClements exceptional leadership and dedication to medical education, Dr. Coultas said, noting that Dr. MacClements received the Exemplary Teaching Award from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians in 2011.

UT Health oversees four graduate level programs: residencies in family medicine, occupational medicine, and a sports medicine fellowship on its campus, as well as an internal medicine residency at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. In addition, medical students from other statewide institutions receive hands-on instruction at UT Health, as do students training to be nurses, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals. The UT System Board of Regents established this award for the nine academic institutions in 2008 and for the six health institutions in 2012. Each year the UT System makes about 40 awards of $25,000 each to outstanding faculty at the health institutions.

Dr. MacClements is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and has taught family medicine residents since he joined UT Health Northeast in 2000. Besides chairing the Department of Family Medicine, he is director of medical education. He is also the Smith County Health Authority and serves as a senior federal aviation medical examiner. Dr. MacClements completed his family medicine residency at UT Health Northeast in 1996.
