ketk_policeTYLER — The Tyler City Council voted to approve funding and planning for a new police substation Wednesday. Tyler Police tell KETK the project has been eight years in the making. The new substation will be on the west side of Cumberland Road next to Faulkner Park. “It’s added security knowing that it’s just right down the road instead of across town,” said nearby resident Benjamin Winters. “South Tyler is really poised to have an additional presence of police, and a substation will be a great addition,” said Sam Mezayek of Tyler City Council.

Tyler Police Chief Gary Swindle believes the addition will help better serve the entire community. “Officers spend quite a bit of time everyday coming from the main station downtown, driving south to work beats.” Chief Swindle said. “This will allow them to start south and be available for citizens.” About half of the city’s existing officers will eventually move to the southern location, which will be about 50 to 60 officers.

The department says the new site will save them about $200,000 in travel and fuel costs. “Knowing the response time would be faster is definitely a big deal,” Winters said. The project will be funded by the city’s half-cent sales tax. Estimated cost is $3.8 million. The estimated time frame for completion is 31 months.
