thumb_tyler-fire-dept-truck-2TYLER — Smoke alarms are a vital part of any home fire escape plan, according to local fire officials. According to the Tyler Fire Department, the alarms can provide the early warning needed for occupants to safety evacuate their home in the event of a fire emergency. It is estimated that approximately two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes that do not have smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. Statistics indicate that citizens who have working smoke alarms inside their homes can cut their chance of dying in a home fire in half. It is because of these continuing statistics that the Tyler Fire Department reminds area residents to take this opportunity to change the batteries in their smoke alarms throughout their homes.

The Fire Department recommends that citizens change their alarm batteries at least two times each year. A common reminder around daylight saving time is to “Change your clocks, change your batteries.” Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley said Friday, As we near the weekend where citizens will be reminded to change their clocks to ‘fall back’ an hour, the Tyler Fire Department would encourage citizens to perform a home fire safety check-up and change the batteries in any smoke alarms located within the home.

Additional information and safety tips regarding these important devices include:

* Smoke alarms should be installed inside every bedroom, as well as outside of each sleeping area and on each level on the home;
* Interconnection of all smoke alarms provides the best protection, when possible;
* Smoke alarms installed near kitchen areas should be located at least 10 feet away from any cooking appliances;
* All smoke alarms should be tested at least monthly and replaced when they have reached their 10-year life span.

For more information regarding the proper type and location of smoke alarms, citizens are encouraged to contact the Tyler Fire Marshals Office to seek further advice and information,” Findley said. Additionally, citizens are reminded that the Tyler Fire Department is continuing the annual Smoke Alarm Installation program within the City of Tyler. Members of the Tyler Fire Marshals Office, along with representatives with the Tyler area Rotary Clubs will be scheduling an installation date in the very near future.

Homeowners who reside inside the City of Tyler are encouraged to contact the Fire Marshals Office at 903-535-0007 to have their name added to the installation list. Our team of professionals will schedule a time to visit your home and install the appropriate number of smoke alarms in the correct locations. This is a service that the Tyler Fire Department is pleased to offer, and we believe that it will have a positive impact on the lives of our citizens, Findley said. For more information about this program, or other fire safety guidelines contact the Tyler Fire Marshals Office at 903-535-0007.
