Suspect In Lufkin Fatal Accident in Custody
Posted/updated on: January 2, 2014 at 10:44 amLUFKIN — A Lufkin woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal accident on Christmas day. Taken into custody early Tuesday afternoon was Jennifer Isabel Mireles, 21. She is said to be the driver of a car that struck and killed bicyclist Alexander Jansen, 22. Using debris at the crash scene, they were able to identify the vehicle that left the scene as a 2001 to 2003 model Mazda Protege. After the information was released to the media, Mireles contacted Lufkin Attorney, Lisa Flournoy, who arranged a meeting for Mireles and Lufkin police.
Mireles told officers she was the driver of the vehicle that hit Jansen. She said that she took her attention away from the road to look for her wallet. She said she looked back to the roadway as she hit the man’s bicycle. Mireles said that she was scared and fled the area to her home in Lufkin. After further investigation, investigators got an arrest warrant for Mireles. She was booked into the Angelina County Jail on a charge of accident involving death or injury, a 2nd degree felony. He bond was set at $15,000.
