DALLAS — More than 400,000 people have now signed a petition on change.org calling for easy access to 911. Last month, Kari Hunt was stabbed to death in a Marshall hotel room. Her nine-year-old daughter called 911 four times from the room but was not connected — because she didn’t know it was necessary to dial “9” for an outside line.

FCC Commissioner Agit Pie says he’s sent a letter to the CEOs of the top ten hotel chains in the u.s. asking how many of their properties have easy access to 911. Pie says one of the great tragedies of the situation in Marshall is that all the hotel likely would have had to do was to re-program its telephone system — and the little girl might have been able to reach someone who could have helped. He says kari’s death will not be in vain if action is taken to ensure that whenever someone calls 911, that person connects with emergency personnel.
