bernie_tiede_news_journalCARTHAGE (Staff/AP) According to documents released by the Panola County District Attorneys Office, previously unsealed documents prompted a reinvestigation of Bernie Tiedes case. Thats according to KETK. The documents are regarding a newspaper article written by Tiedes nephew stating Tiede was severely sexually abused as a child but the state has been unable to verify the history of his childhood. With a heavy presence in a courtroom, Tiede entered with his attorney, Jodi Cole, around 1:00pm, seeking a motion to present relief for sentencing with new evidence and to discuss a pending felony theft charge against Tiede.

Since Judge Dickerson, the original judge in the case, recused himself, recently assigned Judge Diane DeVasto of Tyler heard the case Wednesday and ordered more time to review prior proceedings. Judge DeVasto says a hearing to review the new evidence and discuss felony theft charge may be held in March.

Panola County Court documents unsealed Wednesday show Tiede’s attorneys want to introduce new evidence of a history of severe sexual abuse of Tiede and an abusive relationship between him and Nugent. Tiede’s attorney, Jodi Cole, writes that the abuse finally pushed Tiede over the edge and he shot his elderly companion.

The new evidence could change Tiedes sentencing. Tiede has been serving life in prison for the fatal shooting of 81-year-old Marjorie Nugent of Carthage. The wealthy widow was found dead in a freezer at her home.
