SMITH COUNTY — The Smith County-based Azleway Charter School has received a letter from the Texas commissioner of education denying an in-person informal review with the commissioner as requested in Azelway’s appeal of its charter revocation — but the story’s not over. According to an Azleway news release, the commissioner has referred the appeal to the SOAH (administrative hearing officer) for adjudication. The news release says, “We believe that the hearing officer at SOAH will provide a fair due process opportunity that will result in the reinstatement of the charter to Azleway, Inc.”

The news release continues, “The Azleway Charter School has no tax lien against it and has timely paid all of its debts. The charter holder, Azleway, Inc., had one year of financial concern that has been erroneously reported twice by TEA electronic error. We are the only residential treatment center educational facility on the revocation list and we believe that we are listed in error by TEA.”

Azleway first began its appeal process last month. In December, the commissioner of education told Azleway that Texas would no longer recognize the school starting June 30. According to KETK, state officials say Azleway and five other schools “failed to meet academic or financial accountability performance.”
