thumb_texascollege-sealTYLER — Honorees from near and far, including a legendary football coach, were recognized Friday night at Texas College’s annual Legacy Scholarship Fundraiser at Harvey Convention Center. According to the event’s program booklet, the college stages the yearly gala “in recognition of great support,” celebrating “individuals and organizations who have given unselfishly of themselves for a better Texas College and a better city of Tyler.” The fundraiser continued its tradition of adding a touch of Hollywood to the proceedings, welcoming back actor Marc Gomes as honorary host. Gomes also appeared last year, and previous Legacy events have featured movie star Danny Glover.

This year’s honorees:

Rev. Ralph E. Caraway, Sr. – senior pastor of St. Louis Baptist Church, developer of various service ministries, former city councilman, member of several boards and committees

Rev. Orenthia Mason – pastor of Cole Hill CME Church, coordinator of alumni affairs and external relations at Texas College, president of the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees, longtime educator and community servant

Mark McDaniel – Tyler city manager, elected Mountain-Plains Region vice president for the International City-County Management Association, named the state’s 2010 City Administrator of the Year, past president of the Texas City Management Association; educator, community volunteer

Barry Switzer – philanthropist and championship football coach (University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys); coached current TC head football coach George Cumby at OU

Jerry Woolverton – president of Texas Bank and Trust in Tyler, educator, TC board member, community volunteer, winner of several local awards

All honorees appeared at the gala and offered comments. The five TC students named as 2014-2015 scholarship recipients were Dejesus Adufuye, Houston Creighton, Lechelle Jackson, Bruno Cuhna, and Terence Washington.
