Autopsy: Upshur County Woman Died from Neck, Head Wounds

thumb_police-8GILMER — An Upshur County woman whose body was discovered this past month in a house fire was killed by blunt impact to the head and stab wounds to the neck, according to an autopsy report. KETK and the Longview News-Journal report the bludgeoning of Erica Cooks head led to a skull fracture, bruises to the brain, and cuts of the mouth. She also was stabbed in the ear, the trachea, and the spinal cord, according to the autopsy performed by Robert Lyon of Forensic Medical of Texas in Tyler.

The autopsy was ordered by Upshur County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Laura Norred and completed Feb. 10, the day after Cooks body was found in the Simpsonville area on Woodchuck Road in Upshur County. Lt. Matt Alford with the Upshur County Sheriffs Office said Friday that the case is under investigation, and while no arrests have been made, the sheriffs office does have a person of interest. The autopsy report detailed 11 wounds from blunt impact to the head and torso and six wounds caused by a blade. The manner of death was determined to be a homicide, according to the report.
