darrelllegnonmugNACOGDOCHES An East Texas man who was an admitted Aryan Brotherhood member, and whose record stretched into Cherokee County, is dead after an officer-involved shooting with deputies from the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office. KETK reports deputies were involved in a shooting with Darrell Joseph Legnon, 25, during a traffic stop in Cushing Tuesday night. At around 11:00 p.m., a Cushing Independent School District resource officer conducted a traffic stop after seeing what was termed a suspicious car on the school campus. The motorist attempted to drive away from the officer, but he was able to catch up with the car and stop the it on Highway 204 at 6th Street. Two Nacogdoches County Deputies were in the area at the time and responded as a backup unit.

When the car was stopped, officials realized it was occupied by three men. The resource officer was talking with the driver of the vehicle while the deputies with NCSO were at the rear of the car watching the other two suspects. During the traffic stop, Legnon unexpectedly got out of the car with a shotgun in his hand and turned toward the two deputies that were at the rear of the vehicle, according to authorities. Deputies say they repeatedly told Legnon to put the weapon down. Legnon said no and pointed the shotgun at deputies, according to reports.

At that time, deputies say they were fearing for their lives and shot Legnon. Authorities ended the standoff and Legnon was taken into custody. First responders attempted lifesaving efforts on Legnon to assist with gunshot wounds. When EMS and Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 arrived on scene, they concluded Legnon was dead. The Texas Rangers were summoned to the scene for investigation, and it is still under their authority to investigate the shooting death.

According to officials, it was discovered on scene Legnon had made numerous comments in the last several days that he was going to kill a police officer. It was also learned through numerous tattoos on the suspects body that the suspect has active ties with a white supremacist hate group. Deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay until the investigation is complete. The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an internal investigation into the shooting. Officials say Legnon had an extensive criminal history and had made a previous confession to law enforcement that he was an Aryan Brotherhood gang member. Legnon was out on bond for two counts of aggravated robbery in Cherokee County and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
