Tyler School Board Names Interim Superintendent

Kim TunnellTYLER – Tyler school trustees have named Kim Tunnell as interim superintendent. The action came at a meeting Monday night. Tunnell was most recently serving as Chief Leadership and Performance Officer. She has served Tyler ISD in various roles since coming to the District in 2001, including Executive Director of Strategic Planning, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Coordinator of Staff Development and Instructional Consultant and Acting Principal. Before joining Tyler ISD, she served in administrative and teaching capacities in the Sierra Sands United School District in California.

In her role as Chief Leadership and Performance Officer, Mrs. Tunnell oversaw all campuses as well as Head Start, School Improvement, Title I, Technology, Assessment and Accountability and Staff Development programs. She has been instrumental in leading District administrators, parents and community members in developing a comprehensive strategic plan. Mrs. Tunnell also serves as the Tyler ISD liaison with the City of Tyler, Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, Tyler Junior College, Texas College, The University of Texas at Tyler and other nonprofit agencies and organizations. Additionally, as Executive Director of Strategic Planning from 2012-2013, Mrs. Tunnell assisted in the development of the Tyler Area Business Education Council.

“I am extremely honored to serve our district in this capacity during our transition,” Mrs. Tunnell said. “I am committed to continue the implementation of our strategic plan and to supporting our community partners, parents, staff and students. We have great things happening and I am excited for the future of Tyler ISD.”

Mrs. Tunnell and her husband have three children and twin grandsons. Her passion is education here in Tyler as well as in Zambia, Africa where she has established a foundation and school. Mrs. Tunnell is active in her church and community and serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of East Texas.
