thumb_cityoftylerTYLER — The Tyler City Council Wednesday proclaimed Tyler a Purple Heart City. Tyler has a long history of strong support for this nations veterans, said Mayor Martin Heines. Smith County is home to nearly 18,000 veterans and we are honored to receive the Purple Heart City classification. According to a city news release, “Thanks to Nick Sciarrini and Lloyd Jones, who lead the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Tyler has been proclaimed as a Purple Heart City honoring those who have been so brave in defending Americas freedoms.”

In 2011, the city appointed a Mayors Veterans Roundtable to develop and implement a Community Blueprint for supporting and enhancing veterans services in the Tyler community. The Roundtable focuses on employment, education, housing, medical care, and mental health. One of the outcomes of the Veterans Roundtable is the Veteran and Military Growth Initiative (VMGI). The VMGI outlines more than 40 strategies and tactics for veteran-focused community growth, to bolster the Tyler and Smith County economy as well as demonstrate Tylers never-ending support for its veterans and their sacrifices, according to the release.

Numerous nonprofit services have grown and improved in Tyler, said Heines. The goal is to provide a forum to learn and share best practices and to bring key stakeholders together to collaborate in assisting those who have served our country.
