thumb_TISD_Logo_NewTYLER – Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner of Education Michael Williams recently named John Tyler High School as a Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academy for the 2014-2015 school year. According to a Tyler ISD news release, John Tyler is one of only 16 campuses statewide to earn the T-STEM Academy designation. T-STEM academies are rigorous secondary schools focusing on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects, according to the release. Their goal is to increase the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. Designated T-STEM campuses serve students in grades 6-12 or 9-12.

“Those working in the fields of science, technology and engineering continue to be among the most sought after and highly paid in today’s job market,” said Commissioner Williams. “Texas STEM academies expose students to these key subject areas and challenge them with rigor and innovative instruction that prepares them for success beyond high school.”

With the addition of these newly designated schools, Texas is now home to 91 T-STEM Academies across the state. Evaluations show that ninth grade T-STEM students had a higher likelihood of passing Algebra I than their peers in comparison schools, tenth grade T-STEM students scored higher than comparison students in TAKS Math and had a higher likelihood of meeting or exceeding TAKS standards in all subjects. Additionally, T-STEM students had a higher attendance rate than those in comparison schools. Visit http://www.tea.state.tx.us for more information on T-STEM Academies.
