Tyler ISD Seeking Nominations for First-Ever Distinguished Alumni Award

TYLER — The Tyler ISD Foundation, the Tyler Independent School District, and the Tyler Area Business Education Council have partnered to award the first-ever Tyler ISD Distinguished Alumni Award. The honor will be given annually to a Tyler ISD graduate whose achievements, strengths of character, and citizenship serve as a model to inspire and challenge current students, according to a TISD news release. Officials say award finalists will have achieved excellence and made impactful and significant contributions to their profession or community.
“Tyler ISD is pleased to join with our community partners in recognizing alumni who have demonstrated personal and professional excellence in their chosen pathways of life,” said TISD Director of Communications Dawn Parnell. “We look forward to honoring the accomplishments of Tyler ISD graduates at the annual State of the District luncheon.”
Nominations for the award will be accepted beginning Tuesday, September 2. Nomination forms may be downloaded from http://www.tylerisd.org or picked up at the Tyler ISD Administration Building. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, September 30, at 4:00 p.m. Nominations may be submitted in person, emailed to the Tyler ISD Foundation at foundation@tylerisd.org or mailed to the attention of Dawn Parnell at the Tyler ISD Administration Building located at 1319 Earl Campbell Parkway, Tyler, Texas 75710. The recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award will be recognized during the Tyler ISD Superintendent’s State of the District Address to the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, November 19, at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler.
“The Chamber and Business Education Council are excited to have the opportunity to present this very prestigious award at the annual State of the District luncheon,” said Christi Khalaf, the executive director of the Tyler Area Business Education Council. This public recognition of the impact that education has made in the life of a TISD graduate further demonstrates our renewed community focus on education and student outcomes.”
A selection committee of representatives from the Tyler ISD Foundation, Tyler Independent School District and Tyler Area Business Education Council will review nominations. Nominees will be selected based on criteria including citizenship, service to community, professional contributions, and character. Nominations will be accepted for graduates from any previous or current Tyler ISD high school including Emmett J. Scott High School, John Tyler High School, Robert E. Lee High School and Tyler High School. Nominations must be submitted by another individual. Nominations of self will not be considered.
Nominees must have graduated at least 10 years prior to the nomination. The nominee must also be able to attend the award presentation in Tyler on November 19. Only one nomination packet per nominee will be accepted. If multiple nominations for one individual are received, only the first nomination received by the committee will be considered. Nominees cannot be anyone currently seeking election to a political office.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Tyler ISD and the Tyler Area Business Education Council to present this annual award of distinction,” said Maya Bethany, executive director of the Tyler ISD Foundation. “We recognize the extreme talent level of our students and graduates and we know they have made contributions to society that many of us have benefited from on a daily basis. We hope to not only honor these outstanding individuals, but we want their efforts to be an example of the potential our current students possess.”
