TYLER — The Smith County Sheriffs Office is hosting a training class on organized crime October 24 and 25 for all members of law enforcement and Smith County area communities. According to a news release, organized crime including drug cartels is a major problem that, until fairly recently, was little known. SCSO officials say their goal is to educate law enforcement and the public to recognize some of the signs of organized crime. On Friday, the 24th, SCSO will be offering an eight-hour class on organized crime presented primarily by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Drug Enforcement Administration for those in the law enforcement community. Saturday, officials will open this presentation to both law enforcement and the community at large.

SCSO is extending the invitation to attend the free event on Friday and/or Saturday (no TCOLE hours will be offered Saturday) to learn more about organized crime and drug cartels in East Texas. The symposium will be held at the Regional Training and Development Complex (RTDC) on the Tyler Junior College West Campus, 1530 SSW Loop 323, in room 104, from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Friday. Lunch will be included, provided by Grassroots America. Saturday’s session will run from 8:00am to noon at the Smith County Peace Officers Building, located at 3450 Corporate Drive in Tyler. Email Krista Caulkins at kcaulkins@smith-county.com to register. Space is limited, and registration ends on Thursday, October 23rd.
