vlcsnap_2014_11_01_22h23m52s160TYLER — Some big-name politicians found themselves in Tyler just days away from the midterm elections. KETK reports it was all for Grassroots America’s Champions of Freedom awards dinner. Big names like Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert and Lieutenant Governor Candidate Dan Patrick were all there. They shared their views on the importance of securing the border and keeping Americans safe. Patrick mentioned we apprehend more people who cross the border every week than people born in Texas each week. He also talked about the importance of getting everyone to vote. He said it is not important just to win — but to win big.

“Rural Texas — East, Central and West — are about one third of the total vote,” said Patrick. “So when people sometimes in smaller towns say, ‘Well, does my vote count?’ let me tell you what, it counts a lot because as most people know, the cities of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin… 50/50 Republican/Democrat.”

The keynote speaker of the event was Rafael Cruz, Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s father. Cruz spoke not only about the perceived overuse of executive power by President Obama, but also about what he thinks Republicans need to do this election. “It’s absolutely critical that we retake the Senate this election, and we stop the lawlessness that this administration has had disregarding the constitution, disregarding the rule of law,” said Cruz.

Also on hand at the event was District 6 state Representative Matt Schaefer. Schaefer said the fight this year isn’t just to win back the Senate, but also to win big on key issues. One of those issues is abortion. “It is the first priority of government to protect those who cannot defend themselves. In The Declaration of Independence it talks about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Since I believe, as many others do, that a baby inside the womb is life since the moment of conception, then I have a first responsibility as a member of the Texas Legislature to do everything I can to respect that life created in God’s image,” said Schaefer. A big message at the event was to make sure everyone gets out to vote during this election.

Former U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum (pictured) was also in Tyler Saturday. Santorum was the keynote speaker at the pro-life conference at Grace Community High School. Pro-life organizations set up booths and talked to East Texans about how important it is to understand the issue. Santorum not only spoke about his stance on abortion but also shared his thoughts on how the outcome of the midterm elections will affect elections in 2016. Santorum said if Republicans were to win the Senate, they would start working for those in the middle class who he says were left behind under Barack Obama’s presidency.
