7a1f33b4-7e10-452e-85df-5c6eb296cbcfJACKSONVILLE — According to Jacksonville Fire Department Chief Brent Smith, a veteran fire captain passed away Monday night. Kevin McKinney, a 31-year veteran of the Jacksonville Fire Department, had been on medical leave for a couple months battling a lengthy illness.

“Kevin in his heart was a public servant. He loved his family. He loved his fire department family. He loved the community, and he loved serving it. And he loved all of this with a passion that is indescribable,” Smith said.

McKinney, 52, received a 30-year service pin from the city in October 2013. At that time, then JFD Chief Paul White said McKinney never hesitated or questioned citizens or city departments when asked for assistance.

Funeral services for McKinney will be at 10:00 Friday morning at Central Baptist Church with Larry Hunt and Fire Chief Brent Smith officiating. Burial will be in Still Waters Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville.
