davontayekennedygfTYLER One person has been arrested in connection with a Smith County shooting. The Smith County Sheriffs Office received a call around 11:15 p.m. last Sunday from the East Texas Medical Center Emergency Room regarding a gunshot victim who arrived in a personal vehicle. Tyler police officers and Smith County sheriff’s deputies responded to the hospital.

When police arrived, they observed a vehicle that had what appeared to be bullet holes in it. The officers secured the vehicle until the Sheriffs Office Crime Scene Unit could arrive. The victim, Jerome Williams, and his girlfriend had traveled from Houston to meet with individuals at the Whataburger on Highway 155 South, where they had allegedly arranged through Craigslist to meet with a person interested in purchasing an iPad. They later agreed to meet on the parking lot of the Kelly Community Credit Union on Highway 31 West in Tyler.

Jerome Williams, Teairra Williams, and Brittany Browning drove to the credit union in a gold Cadillac with Jerome Williams driving. Once at the credit union parking lot, the three met with three unidentified persons driving a white four door passenger car. The back seat passenger of the white vehicle got out of the vehicle and walked around to the drivers side door of the vehicle driven by Jerome Williams, where he reportedly began firing a handgun immediately into the drivers side door of the vehicle. Jerome Williams received a gunshot wound to the leg from one of the rounds fired into the vehicle.

Sheriff’s detectives and crime scene investigators were called out to process the hospital and credit union scenes. Sheriffs investigators worked through the night and the following day interviewing the gunshot victim and the witnesses who were inside the Cadillac at the time of the shooting. Monday morning, sheriffs detectives were successful in identifying a suspect vehicle from reviewing surveillance video at the two locations and by interviewing other witnesses who had been located while obtaining the videos. The suspect vehicle was located at an address off Lakeside Drive in Tyler. The owner of the vehicle, a white Chrysler 300, was located and interviewed by sheriff’s detectives. The suspect was later identified as Davontaye Rashaud Kennedy (pictured).

An arrest warrant charging Kennedy with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon was issued as a result of an affidavit outlining the evidence in the assault. On Monday at approximately 7:30 p.m., sheriffs detectives and patrol deputies arrested Kennedy. Bond was set at $250,000. Officials say Jerome Williams refused consent for sheriffs detectives to search the trunk of the 2007 Cadillac. A search warrant was obtained for detectives to gain access to the vehicle. During the search of the trunk of the 2007 Cadillac, detectives fou
