Scouts Honor Bob Garrett

Bob Garrett3TYLER — The East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, presented Bob Garrett Thursday with the Distinguished Citizen Good Turn Award at a luncheon in his honor. The event took place at Green Acres Baptist Church Crosswalk Conference Center. According to a Boy Scouts news release, the award is given annually to an individual, couple or family who has made a significant impact toward enriching the way of life in East Texas.

Garrett is president and CEO of Fair Oil Company in Tyler. He is also a real estate developer, past president of both the Tyler Area Builders Association and the Texas Association of Builders. He was named Developer of the Year by the statewide association in 2007. He currently chairs the UT Health Northeast Development Board and the City of Tyler Unified Development Code Committee. Garrett also serves as vice president of the R.W. Fair Foundation and is a member of the Salvation Army Development Board, the Tyler Economic Development Council, and the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute. Garrett is a member of the Board of Directors of both Southside Bank and the T.B. Butler Publishing Co.

A graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, Garrett has been a member of the Universitys Board of Regents since 2007, served as chair from 2010-2012, and was appointed by the governor for a second term expiring in 2019. He earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Tyler and has been inducted as a UTT Distinguished Alumnus. Garrett and his wife, Debbie, are longtime members of Green Acres Baptist Church. They have 5 children and 7 grandchildren.
