EAST TEXAS — Tyler and Longview are both honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with the annual holiday in Dr. King’s honor coming up Monday. Activities in Longview are already underway, while Tyler has a big celebration planned for Monday morning.

TYLER:

The Tyler Together Race Relations Forum will conduct the city’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr., March, Rally, and Ecumenical Service on Monday, January 19, in downtown Tyler. Participants will convene on the downtown Square beginning at 8:30 a.m. Preliminary activities will get underway there at 9 a.m., and everyone taking part in Monday’s observance is encouraged to be on hand for those activities. The march down Broadway to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will begin at 9:30; the ecumenical service will be held at the cathedral beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a fellowship hour. Activities will continue until approximately 11:30.

This year’s keynote speaker is Frederick Barrow of Dallas, a founding partner of Stafford Barrow, PLLC. The firm is a business litigation boutique, solving business and legal problems for entities as varied as “mom and pops” or Fortune 500 companies, according to information from the company. Barrow is the former president of the J.L. Turner Legal Association – The African-American Bar Association of Dallas; is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Dallas Bar Association; and currently serves as a member of the Legal Advisory Task Force for Congresswoman Eddie B. Johnson (30th District of Texas), as well as a fellow for the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, the Dallas Bar Foundation, and the State Bar of Texas Foundation.

The program at the cathedral will also include essay/visual arts contest winners. Visual arts entries will be displayed at Tyler Public Library.
