thumb_Larry-SmithTYLER — Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith (pictured) says he plans to focus on future prevention now that a no-bill has been returned in a jail records falsification case. It was learned this week that a Smith County grand jury had declined to return indictments on over a dozen jail workers who had been implicated. According to accusations, the jailers faslely indicated they had performed regular cell checks. The case dates to last August.

The no-bill follows an investigation by Texas Ranger Brent Davis, who said the accused had been cooperative during the probe. A number of jailers resigned or were fired in the wake of the initial sheriffs office investigation. Sheriff Smith continues to say false information was entered in violation of department policy. But he tells KTBB he anticipates “no further action other than putting a mechanism in place to make sure we do not reproduce the same mistakes.”
