cityoflongviewLONGVIEW — After more than a year of public input and collaboration, the Longview Comprehensive Plan will be presented for adoption at Thursday’s City Council Meeting. That session gets underway at 5:30 p.m. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended adoption of the document at its February 17 meeting.

The Longview Comprehensive Plan is a long-term planning effort which will serve as the city’s guiding document for growth and development for years to come, according to a city news release. The effort incorporates topics such as parks, land use, transportation, utilities, development standards, population projections, economic development, and public safety. Beginning in the 2013, the City Council appointed a task force of members from throughout the Longview area to lead the process as the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee. Keith Honey served as chair of the committee.

Throughout the planning process, hundreds of residents attended community meetings or hosted meetings with their organization or neighborhood. In addition, more than 2,400 responded to the comprehensive plan survey. An original draft of the plan was presented in October 2014. Since that time, minor tweaks have been made to the document to incorporate community feedback, according to officials. They say the final product is the result of the advisory committee incorporating the input garnered from throughout the community.

According to City Manager David Willard, “It has been great to see the community work together to help create the Longview Comprehensive Plan. Now, it is important that we begin to take the next steps to implement the plan and not let it be just another book on the shelf.” For more information about the Longview Comprehensive Plan, visit http://www.LongviewTexas.gov/plan or contact the City Manager’s Office at 903-237-1021.
