Rexorlandus JacksonTYLER – Freedom for a Smith County jail inmate was brief last night. Shortly after 6:45, the inmate escaped custody as he was being transferred from the central jail facility on East Elm Street in downtown Tyler to the low risk facility. The inmate, identified as Rexorlandus Jackson, was being held on charges of driving while intoxicated, assault, violation of a protective order and evading arrest. He was recaptured and will now be charged with assault as a result of the attempted escape and will be housed at the maximum security jail downtown. Bond will be set on Jackson this morning regarding the new escape charges.

Jackson was handcuffed to another inmate and was able to slip the handcuff off his wrist. This occurred in the temporary sallyport at the central jail. Once Jackson slipped the handcuff off he scaled the fence. Additional sheriff’s deputies and Tyler Police were notified. Jackson was apprehended about two blocks away on Fannin Street by Smith County Deputies and Officers of the Tyler Police Department.

A Smith County deputy injured himself during the short pursuit by cutting his hand while jumping a fence. He was treated with stitches at a local emergency room.
