American Cancer Society’s Chief Medical Officer to Speak in Tyler

Otis BrawleyTYLER — Officials with UT Health Northeast announced that Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s free public cancer conference on Prevention and Early Detection. It’s scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at the UT Health Academic Center Amphitheater. The public event will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. and includes continental breakfast and lunch. Presentations conclude at 1:30 p.m. The annual cancer conference is provided as a public service for those who are interested in learning more about early detection, treatment, and advancements in cancer care. Physicians and nurses who attend for a fee will be eligible for continuing education credits.

“To have someone as important and well-respected as Dr. Otis Brawley of the American Cancer Society as our featured speaker is truly a great opportunity for Tyler and East Texas,” said Dr. Ed Sauter, director of the UT Health Northeast Cancer Treatment and Prevention Center. “Dr. Brawley is one of the American Cancer Society’s leading physicians and is at the forefront of the latest in cancer prevention and early detection. I encourage everyone to make their reservation now for this free, limited-seating event.”

Dr. Brawley will speak from 9 until 10 a.m., followed by a question and answer session. Following Dr. Brawley’s presentation, Dr. Sauter will focus on the importance of diet and nutrition in preventing cancer. At 11 a.m. the public will tour the UT Health Northeast Cancer Treatment and Prevention Center, which was recently accredited by the Commission on Cancer, with three commendations. Following lunch at noon, attendees will learn about the new role that vaccines are playing in cancer prevention, presented by Dr. Jeff Jacobson of the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.
