thumb_uttylerTYLER — The University of Texas at Tyler has collaborated with the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County to form a center in Tyler designed to expand outreach and learning opportunities for the East Texas community and UT Tyler students, Dr. Wesley Hickey, College of Education and Psychology interim dean, announced. Services through the UT Tyler Memory Assessment and Research Center will include the assessment of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients as well as counseling to help family members, caregivers, and others affected by these disorders. The community will continue to benefit from the services already provided by the Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County, in addition to the services made available by the UT Tyler Department of Psychology and Counseling at the center, according to a UTT news release.

“To me, this is an ideal collaboration in which members of the community facing the challenges of aging, faculty scholars developing new and effective assessments and treatments and graduate students learning to provide effective mental health services will all benefit by their work together,” said Dr. Charles Barké, department chair. “We are also indebted to a small group of generous, caring and committed private donors from the Tyler area who provided the funding to create this center. “In the years to come, we will add grant funding to support and expand its continuation, but we needed this kind of support to get the center started.”

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Thursday afternoon at the center, located at 215 Winchester in Tyler, followed by a reception and tour. Sponsorships are available. For opportunities, call 903.566.7487.

UT Tyler graduate students and faculty also will conduct extensive research projects to better assess, understand, develop, and provide treatment for Alzheimer’s and other cognitive disorders associated with aging, as well as support for their families. Research components of this collaboration will help the center achieve an important goal to become part of the Texas Alzheimer’s Research and Care Consortium, according to the news release. Those interested in taking advantage of the program may contact Joy Neal, client services director at the Alzheimer’s Alliance, at joy@alzalliance.org or 903.509.8323, ext. 11. For more information, contact UT Tyler associate professor and center director Dr. Andrew Schmitt at aschmitt@uttyler.edu or 903.566.7370.
