Madison CannonWINNSBORO – The Winnsboro Police Department launched an investigation into the death of a baby. According to police, they received a 911 call on Thursday concerning a non-responsive 16-month old baby girl, identified as Madison Cannon. The Winnsboro Fire Department, police department and EMS all responded to the location. KETK reports an officer on scene reported the child showed signs of abuse with bruising in several spots.

The child was taken to a local hospital and police interviewed doctors and those who who were in the home with the baby.

The child was then air-lifted to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas where Winnsboro police also interviewed family members of the girl and doctors. That is when police say the doctors gave them the news that they had started the protocol hospitals use in order to declare a person “brain dead.” The child was declared deceased on Saturday and police began investigating the death as homicide.

There are suspects in the case, but no names have been released. A sibling of the deceased child, who was also living in the location where the baby was found, has been placed with her biological father, identified as Jesse Cannon, who lives in Florida. The older sibling had only been living with the family in East Texas for three weeks. Cannon came to Texas to pick up the older child and to be by his baby’s hospital bedside when he heard the news of the trauma she underwent, according to police.

The mother of the deceased child, identified as Tabitha Candelora, the mother’s boyfriend, the boyfriend’s mother and the boyfriend’s niece were also all living at the same location as the baby. Police say there is no reason to believe someone outside the home would have harmed the child.

The baby’s body will be sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences for autopsy.

The Wood County District Attorney’s Office, Texas Rangers and CPS are all assisting the Winnsboro Police Department in the investigation.
