StinsonHouseAgrilife_1431443738332_309177_ver1.0QUITMAN — The Quitman Police Department is investigating damage caused to a historic house. According to KETK, officials say the Stinson House at Governor Jim Hogg City Park had several windows on both levels shattered by rocks thrown at them. The house was built in 1869 of virgin pine and oak and became a site of interest to a group of Wood County Master Gardener students in the spring of 2007 as a trainee project. Research was done to determine what kind of plants and gardens were likely to be found around homes in the mid 1800s. The yard was cleared of all inappropriate plants, raised beds were built, and heirloom plants were obtained. The Wood County Master Gardener Association received a first place award in the educational project competition at the Texas Master Gardener State Convention in April 2008 for the project.

More recently the Stinson House has been the location for several community functions as well as Master Gardener activities. It is open for special events and upon request for touring. It is gradually being restored and furnished with period furniture that is donated. It provided the site for one of the monthly Chamber of Commerce meetings, was decorated for Christmas, and hosted a Master Gardener picnic. If you have information, call Wood County Crime Stoppers at 903-763-CASH (2274) or the Quitman Police Department at 903-763-4410. If your information leads to the arrest and/or indictment of the responsible party or parties, you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000. All calls will remain anonymous.
