In a statement to the City Commission, Smith said he wanted to devote more time to other business and personal interests. Smith, a native of Marshall, first served on the Commission as both commissioner and mayor from 2000 to 2008. He did not seek re-election in 2008. In May, 2012, Smith was re-elected to the commission and has served as mayor since then.
Smith said, “It has been my privilege to serve as chairman of the commission for the past several years, and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. Serving in this capacity requires a commitment to devote most of one’s time in order to give the position the attention it deserves.” He added, “I have other business and personal interests to which I would like to devote more of my time. Therefore, I am resigning my position as chairman to be effective upon the commission selecting a new chair at the May 14th meeting, or as soon thereafter at a meeting called for this purpose that a new chair is selected.” He is recommending that the commission appoint Mayor Pro-Tem Garrett Boersma into his position.
