thumb_smithcounty-sealTYLER — More than 208 tons of solid waste and bulk items were collected from Smith County residents at the Greenwood Farms Landfill this year during the annual County-Wide Clean Up. According to a county news release, 238 vouchers were collected this year, allowing residents to haul off their items to the landfill for free, and saving them about $4,000.

Tommy Goodman and Mike Burton, litter abatement officers for the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, held the County-Wide Cleanup for five weeks for the first time this year to give people more time to collect their items to be discarded and to avoid the summer heat. In the past, the cleanups were held for one week in April and one week in July. Goodman said he believes they had a better turnout this time because it was held during the cooler spring months and they had more help getting the word out. Goodman started the voucher program in 2008 or 2009 to allow residents to do a little spring cleaning and take items to the landfill for free. “I think it was real successful,” Goodman said of holding the cleanup for five straight weeks. “I think that is the way we will handle it from now on.”

Goodman said all of the precincts doled out about the same number of vouchers. “I appreciate all of the people who participated in it and all of those who helped us get the information out,” Goodman said. “We look forward to doing it again next year.”

Smith County Commissioners Terry Phillips and Cary Nix said they were pleased with the turnout this year. “It seems like holding it earlier in the spring is the best,” Phillips said. “People feel more like getting out and cleaning up when it is not as hot.” Nix agreed. “I’m glad we offer this service to the residents of Smith County,” Nix said.

During the cleanup, held March 30 through May 2, residents picked up vouchers allowing them to take 3 cubic yards of solid waste, which fills the bed of a regular sized pickup, and/or bulk items to the landfill for free.
