vlcsnap-2015-06-11-17h23m36s196_1434061481033_1391040_ver1.0LONGVIEW — The Humane Society of Northeast Texas has taken in so many cats, staffers there said they are at a 38% euthanasia rate. KETK reports they are now calling on the community for help. In 11 days, the shelter said it’s taken in 400 animals. Nationally, June is Cat Adoption Month, so the shelter is getting on board with the cause by lowering adoption fees in hopes of offseting the overcrowding. Instead of $75, the cats are being adopted out this month for $25. This includes all the basic kitten vaccinations, 30 days’ insurance, and having them fixed.

Humane Society marketing director Kharha Hetrick said the increase in kittens is due to people not spaying and neutering their animals. Hetrick said it poses a problem, since cats and kittens tend to be harder to adopt because of the sheer volume of them and because they lack the diversity dogs have.

The theme of the month was meant to bring awareness to the problem. “Cat Adoption Month, in general, was made to bring light to the fact that there are so many cats in shelters. Cats are less adopted than dogs, cats are more euthanized than dogs, and that’s because there are so many of them that are generic and alike to each other. But even the ones that are simple little black kitties have their own little individual personalities,” said Hetrick.

This month, Fridays are extra special: you can adopt an adult cat for free. If you can’t adopt, but would still like to help, the shelter said you can sign up to foster or just have your own pets fixed.
