KETK reports the plaintiffs are seeking $10 million in damages for the violation of Kristiana Joy Coginard’s Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure. The victim was killed in the Longview Police Department lobby January 22. The Gregg County District Attorney’s Office announced June 26 there would be no charges brought against the officers involved. The case had been presented to a grand jury the previous day, and the panel found that the use of deadly force was authorized under state law. The lawsuit alleges the city failed to properly train its officers. Tim Maloney of San Antonio is representing the family. The suit was filed in Marshall federal court. Longview city spokesman Shawn Hara says the city will review the lawsuit and let the legal process play out.
