Dog Helps Nab Burglary Suspect

Jess dean spencerSMITH COUNTY — A burglary suspect has been arrested by Smith County sheriff’s deputies. He is accused of breaking into the United States Postal Service Center located in the 12600 block of Farm Road 3311. He is identified as Jess Dean Spencer, 23, of Kilgore. He is being charged with burglary of a building and evading arrest.

The sheriff’s department received a call of a burglary in progress shortly after 3:45 yesterday afternoon. When they arrived at the postal facility they found a hole in the perimeter fence of the facility and saw a man in the building. When the man saw the deputies he ran into the woods behind the building. The deputies set up a perimeter around the area and brought in one of their K9s to track the suspect. The dog found him a short time later and he was taken into custody.

They also found Spencer’s vehicle in the wooded area. They said the vehicle contained what is classified as burglar tools. Inside the postal facility they also found numerous tools believed to have been used by Spencer to remove copper wiring from the facility. Copper wiring had been stolen from the facility numerous times recently.
