Fire Causes Heavy Damage at Recycling Plant
Posted/updated on: August 16, 2015 at 3:49 pmCHEROKEE COUNTY — The owner of a recycling plant just south of Jacksonville reports heavy damage from what multiple responding fire crews described as a massive blaze. The fire began after 2:00 p.m. at STS Electronic Recycling on County Road 1520. Witnesses tell our news partner KETK flames and huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the facility. Jacksonville firefighters said they, along with crews from surrounding areas, were assisting. There are no reports of injuries.
According to the owner, material inside the facility was moved outside to redo the floor. During this time, the material caught fire and flames jumped to the warehouse. The fire was brought under control later in the afternoon. Crews continued working to put out hot spots, as well as contain the flames from spreading to nearby grassy areas. The cause of the fire is unknown. STS Recycling is just down the road from Century Industrial Coatings, a chemical plant that was destroyed by a major fire in Wednesday’s early morning hours. That fire remains under investigation.
