BACK THE BLUE 2_1441394567250_4703686_ver1.0TYLER — There wasn’t a safer place to be Friday morning than on Broadway in Tyler. KETK reports officers from several departments gathered together to pay respects to Deputy Darren Goforth and stand together in light of the recent attacks against law enforcement. Governor Abbott requested law enforcement flash their blue lights for one minute at 11:00 a.m. “Well, we’re out here to honor Deputy Goforth and other law enforcement, all other law enforcement that have lost their lives and are serving right now,” said Smith County Game Warden Brad Clark.

Smith county residents showed up in support of local law enforcement and to stand against the violent attacks that have claimed police lives. Among the comments:

“They put their lives on the line every day. They’re out there to do good for the citizens and do a job and the main thing is to go home to their families when it’s all said and done after their shift is over.”

“Especially all the officers out there that are getting hurt out there and getting killed, and it’s scary, and I wanted to show my support for all these officers.”

“We support you 110 percent. I’ve been pulled over. I’ve had tickets. I’ve been pulled over, let go. You support your law enforcement because those are the ones that protect you.”

Toni Halbrooks’s son is a Smith County sheriff’s deputy. She said seeing people support him Friday was overwhelming for her. “I’m having a real hard time keeping the tears back. It’s awesome. It’s great. It’s so cool to think that it’s happening on the square and out here and all different forms of law enforcement are here and people supporting them. It’s great.”

For the officers, Clark said the crowd support was immeasurable. “The vast majority of people appreciate law enforcement and I think this just shows that everybody out here appreciates what we do and we appreciate them for that.” People across the country have taken to tying blue ribbons around their car antennae to let law enforcement know they’re standing behind them.
