William H. McRavenTYLER — The chancellor of the University of Texas system, William McRaven, discussed his Texas Prospect Initiative during a Distinguished Lecture at UT Tyler Tuesday night. According to KETK, McRaven said he hopes the initiative will foster engagement between independent school districts and UT Tyler. “Look at the Pre-K through 12,” says McRaven. “A lot of people would say what does that have to do with Tyler, well it has everything to do with Tyler. It has to do with the students that are part of the pipeline that will come to Tyler next year and over the next eons.”

He also addressed his vision for the U-T system. “We have, again, a lot of great institutions but they are not collaborating as well as they could, and I think by collaborating, certainly what I’ve seen in the military, since 9/11 because the military has changed how it did business, is that by collaborating, we all get better.”

McRaven is a 4-star admiral and former Navy seal who worked as a special operations commander to oversee key counter-terrorism operations worldwide. He began his service as eleventh Chancellor of The University of Texas System back in January. In 2011, McRaven was the first runner-up for Time magazine’s Person of the Year and was subsequently selected by the Dallas Morning News as the 2011 Texan of the Year for his leadership of the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.
