Smith County Jail Passes State Inspection

TYLER – The Smith County Jail has passed its annual surprise inspection by the Texas State Jail Commission. Because of a new jail addition, instead of a two day inspection, this year it was three full 11-hour days. Sheriff Larry Smith says the first two days covered paperwork, such as medical reports and observation logs. The third day was a walk through of the jail. And, while the jail passed, there are some improvements that will be required. The TCJS is now going to require that improvements be made both at the Low Risk Facility as well as the Central Jail in the shower areas. Sheriff Smith says the county has two years to make the improvements.
