Gary Don MurphyLONGVIEW – A Gregg County murder suspect has been released from jail on a reduced bond because of a mistake by the district attorney’s office. Gary Murphy, 52, of Kilgore, was arrested last September. He was being held in the Gregg County Jail under a $250,000 bond. Jail records show he was released on a $10,000 bond on February 2nd. According to the Longview News Journal, he was released on the lower bond because the grand jury indictment was handed down one day after the 90-day allotment for indictments.

According to a statement from the district attorney’s office to the paper, “State law requires that person charged with a felony and who is in custody must either be indicted by a grand jury within 90 days of the commencement of detention or be released from custody, either by reduction in bond or a personal bond.”

Murphy is charged in the death of Arnold Lee McCollaum Jr., 47, of Longview. He was found dead in a room at the American Dream Inn in the 2000 block of East Marshall Avenue, where he lived. According to the autopsy report, when he was stabbed, his jugular vein was perforated. Murphy told police he confronted McCollaum about a drug deal and he stabbed the man. Murphy said he then held the victim down as he bled to death.
