swatsmoke2_1455124656159_6973532_ver1.0 TYLER (AP/Staff) – The Smith County Sheriff’s Office announced the discovery of a woman’s body at the site of a deadly SWAT standoff. The Sheriff’s Office says the body apparently belongs to Frances Nix Barton, who was the mother of Kenneth Barton. KETK reports the body was found in a freezer. Kenneth Barton, a 61-year-old man authorities suspected in the 2014 disappearance of his mother, is dead after the standoff at his home beginning when deputies tried to serve a search warrant Wednesday. Sheriff Larry Smith says autopsies will be performed on both bodies.

Smith said two gunshots were heard coming from inside the house during the Wednesday standoff before a fire consumed the house. Friends had said they had lost contact with Frances Barton, who was 78, in the summer of 2014. Kenneth Barton had told all who asked about her that she was on a mission trip to Europe. Smith said cadaver dogs had alerted their handlers to a spot outside the house.
