Tyler’s Fire Chief is Retiring
Posted/updated on: April 2, 2016 at 3:56 pmTYLER – Tyler Fire Chief Tim Johnson is planning to retire. He has announced he will retire April 27th, after serving as the Tyler Fire Chief for over 5 years. Johnson promoted through the ranks of firefighter, driver, captain and district chief before being appointed to the position of Fire Chief in January 2011. During her 35 years of service with the City of Tyler, Chief Johnson has seen a lot of growth. He has also partnered with TJC to establish the Tyler Junior College Fire Academy and helped establish the Tyler Fire Foundation. Also under Johnson’s leadership, the City of Tyler Fire Department obtained grant funding to procure a regional communications trailer, as well as an emergency response trailer, assets that benefit the entire State of Texas.
According to Mayor Martin Hines, “Chief Johnson has spent more than three decades keeping us safe. He is a great firefighter, leader and friend. We thank him for his devotion to the City and the citizens of Tyler and we will miss him.”
Johnson holds a Master Firefighter certification. He graduated from the Texas Fire Chief’s Academy in 2015 and is a member of the Texas Fire Chiefs Association, the National Fire Protection Association, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Northeast Texas Fire Chief’s Association, the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and the Regional Advisory Council. Chief Johnson served for many years as the chairman of the Tyler Firefighter’s Pension Board, a cause that remains dear to his heart. In addition to his service to the City of Tyler, Chief Johnson has served his hometown of Mabank, Texas as a City Council member and as mayor pro tem.
Chief Johnson will be honored at a reception at the Tyler Rose Garden from 3;30 to 5:00pm on Wednesday, April 27th.
