Officials Capture Escaped East Texas Inmate

Jay Scott McEversCANTON — An escapee in Van Zandt County is back in custody. Jay Scott McEvers, 46, escaped the Van Zandt County Detention Center around 8:00 Wednesday night. He was jailed on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon and also has a previous arrest for armed bank robbery. His mother, Carolyn McEvers and his girlfriend Cynthia Heese, were also arrested. McEvers was arrested on Van Zandt County Road 3418 after he believed he was having vehicle trouble with the second vehicle he stole after the escape.

McEvers has now been charged with escape, a first degree felony, and a a bond of $500,000 was added to his offenses. McEvers’s mother Carolyn has a bond of $50,000 on her charge of facilitating escape. As of Wednesday night McEvers’s girlfriend Cynthia was not complying with the book in process and has not been arraigned for her class c misdemeanor.
