Disaster Declaration Issued for Smith County

DAMAGE1_1461982234599_8348573_ver1.0EAST TEXAS — Significant damage was reported in the Lindale area following a possible tornado touchdown. Several injuries were reported from Friday nights storms. According to KETK, ETMC has released the following statement: “ETMC EMS transported two victims from last night’s storms near Lindale. One was a child with a traumatic injury who was transported to Trinity Mother Frances Hospital. The other was an adult who was trapped in an a house and taken to ETMC Tyler. Both were from different locations outside of the city limits of Lindale and both were non-life threatening injuries.”

At least one business received heavy damage. A reporter on scene said Hibbett Sports is destroyed. At a news conference, Mayor Robert Nelson said he has declared the city a local disaster area. Smith County Judge Joel Baker issued a disaster declaration late Friday night. Minor injuries have been reported in the Lindale area at at a home on Jim Hogg Road. Several thousand people lost power during the onslaught. Also, heavy thunderstorms brought rain and hail to portions of Smith County Friday, and various watches and warnings went up late in the day around the area. You’re advised to monitor KTBB for updates and seek shelter as needed.

According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, many of the roads in the northeastern part of the county are affected by flooding or downed trees. The Smith County Road and Bridge Department is asking all available employees to report to the yard as soon as possible to help with clean up following Friday’s storm. The Red Cross is dispatching people to the Lindale area. A shelter is being opened for those impacted by tonight’s severe weather at First Methodist Church, located at 402 W. Hubbard Street, Lindale. The location is open for anyone impacted by the storms.
