Uber_1472054667215_10692083_ver1.0TYLER — The Tyler City Council has approved the operation of Uber in the city, passing the transportation for hire ordinance in a 5-2 vote. According to information from Uber, the company operates in a number of Texas cities, and Tyler is the 14th city in the state to pass a modern ridesharing ordinance. KETK reports services in Tyler will start in about a month.

Local transportation companies opposed Uber operations in Tyler, saying the company doesn’t perform criminal background checks. But according to an email from Uber, “Before driving, every driver undergoes an extensive pre-screening process, which includes a thorough review of a person’s driving and criminal history. The criminal history check draws from more than 1,500 national, state and local databases, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website, National Criminal Database Search (NATCRIM), PACER, and several different databases used to flag suspected terrorists.” Also, Tyler Police Chief Jimmy Toler said there are no background checks on employees with Tyler’s taxi company and there have been no significant issues.
